NYSEARCH Animation Provides Overview of Two NYSEARCH R&D Projects Related to Low-Carbon Fuels

This animation provides a short overview of two NYSEARCH Projects:

(1) M2021-001: Study of Natural Gas Dispersion with Blended Hydrogen in Residential Structures
(2) M2018-011: Scaling of Microbial Power-to-Gas Conversion for Long-Term Operation

The animation highlights key findings from both of the projects, as well as goals and objectives of both projects. To help investigate the impacts, challenges, and opportunities for implementing emerging, low-carbon fuels, these two NYSEARCH projects investigate two distinct areas of research:

(1) Under project M2021-001, the potential impact of Blended Methane-Hydrogen Gas in residences is studied, such as what may be the effect on leak detection and other aspects of using blended gas. Fire & Risk Alliance, LLC (FRA) was retained by NYSEARCH to conduct experimentation and a modeling investigation into the effect of hydrogen on the dispersion of methane-hydrogen gas mixtures in various experimental settings. The results of this project are detailed in a NYSEARCH Final Report released in 2022.
(2) Under project M2018-011, an innovative microbial power-to-gas platform is studied, reviewing its future potential to produce methane that can be upgraded as renewable natural gas (RNG) and injected into existing infrastructure. This research addresses the molecular, cellular and metabolic processes associated with a long-term operation of an electromethanogenic system; converting electrical energy plus CO2 + H2 into methane at high rates. About NYSEARCH

For more than thirty years, NYSEARCH has worked as a consortium of natural gas Local Distribution Companies (LDCs) who have a common interest and need for research and technology development and demonstration. Today, as part of the Northeast Gas Association (NGA), NYSEARCH manages over (30) projects in various stages of development for LDCs, transmission companies, federal agencies and their manufacturing and commercial partners. NYSEARCH is located in Parsippany, NJ and NGA is headquartered in Needham, Massachusetts.
